    [ Jawbox ]

    Jawbox

Jawbox, an original Discord band, has always amazed me with their mature song writing and complex sea of chordal structures. Their latest releaseJawbox furthers my amazement.

What can someone say about this record? Lyrically, the album is exceptional. Musically, Jawbox stands alone individually on an island in the mess of music at our ears reach. The two guitar players/singers, J. Robbins and William Barbot, create a world of strange and elusive chords. Bassist, Kim Coletta, holds the whole sandwich together with constancy and aggression.

And, I am impressed as always by drummer extraordinaire, Zachary Barocas. His unique and utterly confusing style of rhythm is what originally attracted me to the band. His beats, however complex and impossible to replicate, drive the band to unreachable heights.

One of the many wonderful things about this disc is the beautiful picture their music and vocals paint. Jawbox has a driving sound which could turn some listeners off, but rather than having shouted raspy vocals, they have well delivered and well derived vocal harmonies. And those listeners who were turned off by the drive are now turned on by the harmonious tones. I love it. Jawbox sometimes leaves me wanting a bit more however. At times I feel the band could play with a bit more aggression, but then again that's just me. If you liked the old stuff, the new stuff will kill you. And if you haven't heard them yet, then what the hell are you waiting for.
